Looking for some eclectic new items to add to your wardrobe or home? Or, still searching for the perfect holiday gift? Check out the Melrose Trading Post (MTP)! Located at Fairfax High School, the Melrose Trading Post (or, flea market) takes place every Sunday from 9AM to 5PM, rain or shine. As a premiere event for arts and education in its community, the flea market offers a curated selection of handcrafted artisan goods, eclectic art and craft, vintage fashion, antique furniture and one-of-a-kind treasures.
Organized by Greenway Arts Alliance, a non-profit organization, the MTP has been an essential community event for the Los Angeles Unified School District since 1997. Through admission and vendor fees, the organization awards grants to Fairfax High School for sports equipment, beautification projects, teacher programs, theatre productions and more. Students from the school are offered internships and volunteer opportunities to build their real-world experiences. The MTP also works as a promoter for small businesses and entrepreneurs in the community by offering business opportunities.
As a guest, your visits to the flea market actually hit two birds with one stone. You can shop to your heart’s content at this unique flea market while also giving back to the community through your presence alone.
Affectionately called the “Fairfax swap meet” of “Fairfax flea market” by locals, this event is sure to become a quick staple in your monthly schedule. Select weekends also feature local musicians and artists through music, dance, theatre and spoken word events throughout the year, so be sure to double check the calendar to see what’s going on each weekend!
How to get there?
Get to the flea market through the LA Metro (the 217, 218 and 10 buses stop close by), biking (it’s eco-friendly!) or by driving (free on-campus parking available on a first-come first-serve basis). Entrance is through the parking lot on Fairfax Avenue, south of Melrose Ave.
